ABOUT US

a new approach to global health

Founded in 2021, Emergency Project was established with the goal of promoting and advocating for public health measures to increase access for those living in a world without emergency healthcare. Our project collaborates with strategic partners while utilizing the practical tools of modern day emergency medicine, a growing specialty in most of our world, to care for patients and enhance medical services in regions suffering the greatest health inequities. Our teams have coordinated humanitarian missions in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Ukraine, Pakistan, Syria and Zimbabwe.

The problem

half of global deaths due to insufficient emergency care

15 of the leading causes of death globally have emergent manifestations

20% of lower middle income countries are without any organized 911 system

1/3 of the world is without access to emergency medications

2/3 of humanity is without access to diagnostic imaging

Organized emergency care does not exist in most of our world

OUR MISSION

USE EMERGENCY MEDICINE TO CHANGE THE WORLD

Emergency Project’s mission is to bridge gaps in global health through humanitarian work that integrate the core principles of emergency medicine. Our focus is straightforward: find communities in need, then provide direct assistance and continuity of care through ongoing partnerships. Our team of doctors, PAs, nurses, paramedics, and nonclinical volunteers organize free health clinics while providing patients and local staff with the resources and training necessary to create the largest impact possible, utilizing the practical utility of modern day emergency medicine.

A PRACTICAL MEANS OF MAKING A difference!

PEOPLE

Our greatest asset is our volunteers. Through our valued partnerships with healthcare organizations, we have access to thousands of providers from various fields ready to make an impact.

EDUCATION

Seminars and hands-on training are aligned with our mission schedules. Tablets and open access education platforms are provided to global health partners free of cost.

DIAGNOSTICS

Point of care diagnostic tools are utilized on-site then donated to the communities we serve, most notably - full body scanning Butterfly Ultrasounds. This vital piece of equipment can fit in the pocket and connects to most tablets and phones.

CARE

Our initiatives are equipped with a full pharmacy, providing the capacity to care for a wide range of acute and chronic illnesses. Patients are provided with the medicines they need directly and free of charge.

EMERGENCY PROJECT in action

Our impact

chimanimani, Zimbabwe

In January 2024 EP created a provider based mission mission in the remote mountains of Chimanimani, Zimbabwe - an area with great need where work like this has never been done before. This region was heavily impacted by Cyclone Idai in 2019, leaving their health system paralyzed. After providing health services at various rural clinics throughout the week at one of the most heavily impacted areas, our team donated Butterfly ultrasounds, EDAN EKGs, iPad tablets with open-access to functionality and educational applications, as well as various other diagnostic tools to assist in continuity of care. Our team of clinical volunteers continues their commitment with on-going remote patient assistance and partner education.

amman, jordan

Jordan has the second highest refugee population in the world due to surrounding conflict and geopolitical instability. Though they’ve remained committed to assisting the health needs of their refugee communities, nearly 60% of the Syrian refugee population are still living in extreme poverty and struggle to access basic services. Our team of providers completed two successful missions in 2023, caring for over 3000 patients. We worked alongside community volunteers and four of the regional medical schools providing primary and urgent care services to this vulnerable population. Each provider was equipped with a Butterfly ultrasound and our trip concluded with a global health conference and ultrasound seminar dedicated to advancing emergency and diagnostic care abroad.

swat valley, Pakistan

Pakistan has recently been labeled the ‘Frontline of Climate Change’ secondary to drastically rising temperatures in the south with the rapidly melting northern Himalayan glaciers to the North. This led to some of the worst flooding in human history in 2019, which impacted the lives of 33 million people, leaving many without access to the most basic of health services. Our team of emergency and primary care volunteers ventured into the remote Himalayan foothills of the beautiful Swat Valley to provide assistance and fill gaps in community health needs. Our team cared for over 2500 patients at a local women and children’s health clinic. To leave a lasting impact our team also provided education to local providers while donating vital diagnostic tools.

Lviv, ukraine

At a time where Europe was confronted with the worst refugee crisis since WWII due to Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine, our team was fortunate to join forces and assist Operation White Stork (www.whitestork.us) as they built the largest refugee evacuation programs in the region. Our team was able to assist on multiple occasions bringing evacuees to safety, while we played our part in bringing vital health related supplies into the country. Due to whitestork’s partnership with airbnb, after the nearly 40,000 refugees were evacuated, many of which were provided with 30 days of free shelter in Europe. Whitestork continues their mission by helping those directly impacted on the frontline.

dominican Republic

In the Dominican Republic, Emergency Project has conducted impactful medical missions in both the bustling city of Puerto Plata and along the Haiti border in Dajabón. Partnering with local organizations, we provide emergency and primary care services to underserved communities, addressing critical health needs such as trauma, infectious diseases, and chronic conditions. In areas with limited access to healthcare, our team delivers free medications, diagnostic tools like ultrasounds, and life-saving treatments. By collaborating with local providers and offering training, we ensure a lasting impact while bringing hope and healing to vulnerable populations.

Jutiapa, Guatemala

In Guatemala, Emergency Project brings life-saving healthcare to rural and indigenous communities with little to no access to medical services. Along with our partners at DIG (Dream, Invest, Grow), our team helped set up a fully operational clinic offering diagnostic tools like ultrasounds and EKGs, distributing free medications, and addressing critical health concerns. With a focus on maternal and child health in regions where infant and maternal mortality rates are among the highest in the Western Hemisphere, we deliver compassionate care while educating local providers to create lasting change. Together, we’re bridging the healthcare gap and transforming lives.

FAQs

  • Emergency Project’s mission is to bridge the gaps in global health through humanitarian work that integrate the core principles of emergency medicine. Our teams of dedicated volunteers find communities in need, then provide direct assistance and continuity of care through ongoing partnerships, utilizing the practical utility of modern day emergency medicine.

  • Emergency Project is an organization led mostly by a team of experienced emergency medicine practitioners. Our focus is to assist communities in-need who have been impacted by some of the most concerning issues confronting humanity. Whether it be climate change, conflict, famine, or natural disaster; it’s our belief that emergency medicine as a specialty has the potential to make the largest impact to those with the greatest need.

  • EP was birthed from the the simple fact that most human deaths result from inadequate emergency medical care around the world, most notably in lower income nations (54% in 2019 alone according to the World Health Organization). With Emergency Medicine as a specialty unacknowledged in most of our world, the WHO is now claiming that “It is vital that the world now seizes the chance to do things differently.” And that there is a “welcome sense of urgency to efforts to strengthen the way the world prepares for, prevents, detects, and responds to health emergencies”

It’s a part of our mission to do things differently by addressing these urgent needs while on our humanitarian missions. Our goal is to learn from the mistakes of the past when addressing global issues, to make the greatest impact possible using our skills as emergency providers.

  • Our missions are a mutually beneficial experience for both the communities we serve and the volunteers on our teams. Extensive literature suggests that the greatest limitation to the advancement of emergency medicine as a specialty is physician burnout in high and middle income nations. Volunteerism and global health work are proven to counteract this pressing issue. We at EP make it one of our highest priority to include team-building and wellness activities that are a cultural and therapeutic experience for our team as well.

  • Most of EPs funding comes from healthcare related Corporate Foundations, individual donors related to our cause, and mission aligned partner organizations.
